Deep weekly water through the first two summers, then every week or two in bloom season. Established trees are impressively drought tolerant, but consistent summer moisture extends the bloom run. Avoid overhead spray on flowers — water at the root zone.
Prune in late winter while dormant: remove suckers, crossing branches, and anything thinner than a pencil. Preserve the natural vase shape and the smooth, exfoliating trunks — never top the tree into knuckles. Deadheading the first flush in summer often triggers a second bloom.
A light balanced feeding in early spring supports bloom; heavy nitrogen buys you leaves at the expense of flowers. In good soil, mature trees need little more than mulch.
Powdery mildew shows up in shade and still air — full sun and an open canopy are the cure. Aphids can drip honeydew onto paving; a strong hose blast or insecticidal soap resets them. Sooty mold follows aphids, so treat the cause, not the black film.
